Hissho Sushi

Responsibly
Sourced

Hissho Sushi is committed to being an industry leader in responsible sourcing. At Hissho, responsible sourcing is not only about ensuring we achieve a 100% responsibly sourced seafood supply-base, but also partnering with best-in-class suppliers who adhere to our strict standards for food safety and quality, fair labor practices, and protections focused on food defense and prevention of food fraud.

Why is this Important?

We believe in the importance of protecting our oceans. Responsible seafood sourcing allows us to do our part in maintaining healthy fish populations and protect the ocean ecosystem for future generations. Responsible sourcing is a voluntary commitment made by Hissho to take environmental and social factors into account when managing relationships with our suppliers. This is an indispensable component of effective and ethical supply chain management.

Farms

Our seafood from sustainable farms is fully traceable, processed to our spec, and environmentally friendly.

Fisheries

We source seafood from third-party certified fisheries, committed to responsible fishing practices, food safety and quality standards.

Wildlife

Hissho’s commitment to responsible sourcing helps the company to take a stake in protecting the oceans, the environment and the economy of the seafood industry.

Suppliers

Hissho only partners with best-in-class suppliers who adhere to our strict standards for food safety, and quality. All vendors must be third-party certified, and the seafood traceable to farms or fisheries.

What Makes Hissho Seafood Different?

Through Hissho’s selection and active engagement with supplier partners, we are committed to a 100% Responsibly-Sourced seafood supply base and will set the example for responsible and sustainable sourcing in our industry. Our wild-caught fish is MSC certified by approved 3rd party auditors, or vetted as sustainable by FIP or governmental standards, and our responsibly farmed products meet a minimum of BAP 4-star or ASC certification. Our seafood is traceable to farm or fishery. We partner only with best-in-class suppliers who adhere to our strict standards for food safety, quality, and fair labor practices.

Our Suppliers

Our commitment to be a part of the solution

As part of our mission to protect our oceans, we hosted a volunteer event with Charleston Surfrider to pick-up trash in our local coastal environment. The pollution causes a threat to marine life and ultimately the sushi that our customers eat every day. Learn more about the fight against pollution from our partner, Charleston Surfrider, an organization dedicated to protecting and preserving our beautiful coastal environments.

Hissho Sushi
Certifications

Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) Certified

BAP is the world’s only aquaculture certification program that covers the entire production chain in terms of sustainability, including environmental, social, food safety and animal health and welfare.

The Global Seafood Alliance is an international, nonprofit trade association dedicated to advancing responsible seafood practices through education, advocacy and third-party assurances. As part of GSA, BAP ensures aquaculture is done responsibly through its third-party certification program.

All of Hissho’s farmed seafood meets a BAP 4-star certification, which means that the entire system—from feed mill to hatchery...farm to processing plant—complies with BAP’s standards.

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Certified

The Marine Stewardship Council is an international nonprofit whose mission is to end overfishing and ensure seafood is caught sustainably. They are the world’s leading certification program for sustainable wild-caught seafood. Fisheries are evaluated by an independent third party against the MSC Fisheries Standard for healthy fish populations and ecosystem.

Working with scientists, fisheries, industry experts, and other nonprofits, the MSC’s goal is to improve the way our ocean is fished through the MSC Fisheries Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. The MSC program incentivizes sustainable fishing practices globally.

Through the use of the MSC blue fish label, the MSC makes it easy for everyone to identify and choose certified sustainable, wild-caught seafood.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program

The seafood watch is a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium to assess the impact on marine and freshwater ecosystems to fisheries (wild-caught) and aquaculture (farming) operations.

When you choose to buy sustainable seafood, you push suppliers to source more environmentally responsible products, driving significant improvements throughout the industry. Ultimately, your choices have an impact on the health of the ocean.

Knowing the details of how and where your seafood is harvested is key to protecting our ocean and ensuring a long-term supply of seafood.

Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Certified

The ASC provides reviews aquaculture producers and and products for sustainability and responsibility to ensure that the seafood they are providing is socially responsible and sustainable for the environment.

All of Hissho’s farmed seafood is ASC Certified, which means the products we sell are sustainable for the environment socially responsible.

Hissho Sushi is the nation's 2nd largest sushi distributor.
